Turkey Apple Cheddar Panini with Honey Mustard

Chef Taha Ayad's Recipe Turkey Apple Cheddar Panini with roasted turkey, crisp apple, melted cheddar, and honey mustard

A Turkey Apple Cheddar Panini brings together crisp bread, savory turkey, sharp cheddar, and fresh apple slices in one warm sandwich. It’s a combination that works especially well when the weather starts to cool, but it’s just as welcome for a quick lunch any time of year.

I tested this version with simple ingredients and a short cooking time because that’s how I like to make it at home. The buttered bread turns crisp while the cheddar melts into the turkey, and the apples keep enough bite to add freshness instead of disappearing into the filling.

Ingredients and Tools for a Turkey Apple Cheddar Panini

Good sandwiches don’t need a long ingredient list. What matters is choosing ingredients that complement each other instead of competing for attention. French bread gives this panini a crisp exterior while staying sturdy enough to hold the filling. Spread butter on the outside of each slice rather than inside the sandwich. It browns more evenly and creates that lightly crisp crust most people expect from a panini.

Inside, layer oven-roasted turkey, sharp cheddar cheese, and an optional spread of honey mustard. The mustard adds a little sweetness and tang that works well with both the cheese and the apple without overpowering either one.

A panini press makes the process straightforward because it cooks both sides at once. If you don’t have one, a heavy skillet or stovetop griddle works well too. Just press the sandwich gently with another pan while it cooks so the bread crisps evenly.

Choosing an Apple That Stays Crisp

The apple is more than a garnish. It provides a cool, crisp contrast to the warm turkey and melted cheddar.

I usually reach for a Honeycrisp because it stays firm during the short cooking time and has enough sweetness to balance the sharp cheese. Other crisp apples can work as well, provided they hold their texture when warmed. Slice the apple thinly—about ⅛ inch thick—so it softens slightly without making the sandwich bulky or difficult to bite through.

How to Assemble and Grill the Panini

Start by preheating your panini press or griddle so it’s already hot when the sandwich goes on. A properly heated surface helps the bread brown before the filling has a chance to dry out.

Cut the French bread into even slices and spread about 1 tablespoon of butter on one side of each piece. Place the buttered side against the hot cooking surface. If you’re using honey mustard, spread a thin layer on the inside of the bread before adding the turkey.

Layer the turkey, apple slices, and cheddar cheese evenly across the bread. Try not to pile everything into the center. An even layer allows the cheese to melt consistently and keeps the sandwich from sliding apart when pressed.

Top with another slice of bread, butter the outside, and close the panini press. Cook for 3 to 5 minutes, depending on your appliance. You’re looking for bread that’s evenly golden with crisp edges and cheese that’s completely melted. If using a griddle, flip carefully halfway through and press gently with a heavy pan for even browning.

Give the sandwich a minute to rest before cutting it in half. It doesn’t need long, but that brief pause helps the melted cheese settle instead of running out onto the plate.

What to Serve with Turkey Apple Cheddar Panini

This sandwich is filling on its own, though a simple side rounds out the meal nicely.

A bowl of tomato soup makes an easy pairing because the acidity balances the buttery bread and rich cheddar. During cooler months, I often serve it with butternut squash soup, which echoes the sweet notes from the apple. If you’re looking for something lighter, a crisp green salad with a mild vinaigrette adds freshness without competing with the sandwich.

Keep the sides uncomplicated. The panini already delivers plenty of flavor.

A Warm Sandwich Worth Making This Fall

Some recipes earn a regular place in the weekly rotation because they’re reliable, not complicated. This Turkey Apple Cheddar Panini is one of those meals. A few everyday ingredients and about 10 minutes are all it takes to make a sandwich with crisp bread, melted cheddar, and fresh apple in every bite.

Ingredients

  • 1 loaf French bread cut into 12 even slices
  • ¾ cup spreadable butter divided
  • 1 lb oven-roasted turkey breast thinly sliced
  • 6 slices sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 medium Honeycrisp apple cored and sliced about 1/8 inch thick
  • 2 tbsp honey mustard optional, or to taste

Equipment

  • Panini Press or Griddle
  • Bread Knife
  • Cutting Board
  • Butter Knife
  • Paring Knife

Method

  1. Preheat a panini press or griddle while you prepare the ingredients, then cut the French bread into 12 even slices.
  2. Spread about 1 tablespoon of butter on one side of each bread slice and place six slices butter-side down on the hot panini press or griddle.
  3. Spread honey mustard on the inside of each bread slice, if using.
  4. Divide the turkey, thin apple slices, and cheddar evenly among the six bottom bread slices, keeping the layers even so the sandwiches press cleanly.
  5. Top each sandwich with a remaining bread slice, butter-side facing up, and close the panini press.
  6. Grill for 3 to 5 minutes, until the bread is evenly golden and crisp and the cheddar is fully melted.
  7. If using a griddle, flip each sandwich carefully halfway through cooking and press gently with a heavy skillet for even browning.
  8. Let the sandwiches rest for 1 minute, then cut them in half and serve immediately.

Notes

  1. Slice the apple about 1/8 inch thick so it warms slightly while keeping a crisp texture.
  2. Honeycrisp works well, but another firm, crisp apple may be substituted.
  3. A fully preheated press or griddle helps the bread brown before the turkey dries out.
  4. Avoid overfilling the sandwiches, which can cause the layers to slide while pressing.
